Week 6

Today at Enrich I versed Nathan in chess and it was stale mate. The class also did a Wilson game called Hula Hoop Amoeba, and a thinkers key rotation. I only did the variations key with Alana and the ridiculous key with Katie. In the ridiculous key Katie said "6 year old's are allowed to drive",  "you only have to go to school 1 day per week", and "shoes do not exist" - we had to think of all the positive things about these ridiculous statements.

Type without looking?

Today at Enrich we did a letter typing programme called Peter's online typing test which contained the letters a,s,d,f. We also had Grant Meikle  from the sea shepherd organisation come to talk to us about saving whales and seals and about his perspective on saving the whales. He was the engineer so he had to pump gas into the ship every four hours so he had a cabin of his own. He also told us that he shot stink bombs at the Japanese and the gas would make it so they couldn't eat the whales but they could be used for scientific research.

4 reds 4 blues 1 ball

Today at Enrich everyone except the teachers played 4 reds 4 blues 1 ball. In the game you have to not let any of the bean bags or the ball touch the ground, you also have to throw the bean bag or ball, but your not allowed to pass it. You can't pass it to the person exactly beside you.  I thought the game was cool, but it was pretty challenging!

Lego animation

Today I did a lego animation during passion time! It was a lesson about why you shouldn't hurt the environment.  I also did must dos and picks. The must dos and picks that we had to do are:  Affective - Adora Svitak, Where in the world? debating, spinning matchstick experiment, charcoal landscapes, landscape design and before school picks. Today so far I have done the spinning matchstick experiment.  I learnt that it was static electricity that made the matchstick turn around.  I have also completed the Where in the World? task. During chess time I played Natasha and  I won by putting her in check mate.

Back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to term four I hope you guys are excited for me to be back. Today at Enrich I played a leader board chess game and won easily. Then I did a Wilson game which is like bullseye but you have to get the beanbag in a bucket instead and if you didn't catch the beanbag you had to put the basket back to the start. Alana's team came first in getting the beanbag into the last bucket but my team would have won based on points. We learnt what sustainability means - it means keeping something going. We also done a MacGyver challenge where we had to figure out a way to get a hammer and a chisel that was 2.5 metres away from you so you could get you out of cement before the bomb exploede! No-one made it so we all blew up, (not really!)

Scared!!!!!

Today we visited the city council chamber and told them our idea for our environment project and we got to sit at a table in front of Darren and Bill the city council people. Since Tim Shadbolt wasn't there Darren took over for him. After that they let us have morning tea there and what we had was muffins and juice. We were the first group to go up and present our keynote at first I felt a bit scared but then I felt a little bit better.

City Council Preparing

Today the Wednesday our group from Enrich is preparing to go to the city council chambers to present our keynotes for Wachner Place and our group  is all done and ready to go.  This was the last week to get ready for it and next week we're going to be presenting our presentation.  Alana said we might be scared about talking to adults that we don't know, but don't worry if they ask us questions, because they are interested in our ideas.  Every group wants the city council people to say that they can put their idea in Wachner Place.

Pollution

Today Enrich's Wednesday group watched a video about how we pollute the air and it showed us the ten   most polluted cities in the world. Luckily for us Invercargill isn't one of those cities.  The worst city is Azkah, Iran. In it the city it is completely yellow and you can't see a thing so I think you would be happy that you don't live there. The people there don't realize because they are used to it now and the kids that are born there grow up used to it as well so everyone there is basically used to it.  They might be used to it but that doesn't mean we just could sit around and do nothing about does it?  No, it doesn't, so I suggest you stop playing around and make the future better. This pollution is what we're doing, not them, all of us.

Environment project

Today we did even more of our environment projects and we figured out where we were going put  our ball tilting maze and answered some questions that we thought the City Council would ask.  We're going to hang our ball maze up on a blank bit of wall in Wachner Place. But... before we do it we have to convince the council to go with our plan!

Fibonacci

Today at Enrich the maths group did Fibonacci with spirals. The teacher asked if we know how it was related to Fibonacci and no one could guess why, so the teacher showed us the answer. We drew squares in a clockwise direction with the size of each square following the Fibonacci sequence. The fibonacci sequence goes: 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21 and so on.  You find the next number by adding the previous 2 numbers together.  Do you know the fiftieth fibonacci number? Its twelve billion five hundred and eighty six million two hundred and sixty nine thousand and twenty five!

"Pegasaurus"

Today I played "Pegasaurus" and what you have to do is steal pegs of the other team and you get two points for every one you still have on your back and one point for every one you steal of the other teams back. You have five people on each team and three pegs on each players back. You only get one minute to steal as many pegs as you can. It is a really fun game that also teaches us about strong choices. PS Today is my birthday and I am 8!

Biology

Today I did some biology for our high interest station, like we did last week. But today we did comic life and put our house fly pictures on comic life. After that we emailed it to Darryn and had morning tea. After morning tea we did some p4c and some debating. The topic for the debate was  do you think under eighteen should be able to go on face book. My side was the positive and it was really hard to come up with an idea.

Tuesday 7 August 2012

High Interest station

Today I did a high interest station using dinoscopes with Darryn. We pulled a house fly apart and took photos of it. Some had spider webs and do you know what I found a spider and it was alive! I took lots of photos of the spider while Darryn moved the dinoscope around so we would not lose it.

Circuit boards

Today the science people made a circuit board with Jenni. There were three groups doing it but only two groups worked, mine was one of them. My groups one lit and then went pop! We needed 8 batteries, some wire, a jar, pie tins, 3cm of paper roll and leads. The people in my group were Finn Alex and myself. Every teacher looked at ours and the teacher took photos.

Tuesday 24 July 2012

Enviroment

Today Anastazia from Southland Environment  came and taught us about the environment. But after we realized that most things we have done in the past affected the future, so next week we are going to do a project to help stop the people realize their mistakes. Because we want more people respecting Invercargill not just some but everyone.  She told us about how we can help protect nature and get rid of the pests that try and harm nature.

Tuesday 17 July 2012

Chemistry

Today I did chemistry, it was pretty cool because we made some Elephant Toothpaste.  When we put yeast in and it rose up up up.  It looked like it was toothpaste because some of it had stripes in it.  Mine didn't.  I did yellow and green food colouring but I over did my yellow so I only got yellow.  We saw this video of some chemistry it was outside so they put all the stuff that we did except food colouring and it exploded in to the air because they used more hydrogen peroxide than us.

Self assessment

Its just 2 more days till the end of term 2!  Today Enrich's Wednesday  group did their self assessment for the end of the term.  I put mine on this page as you can see right under my writing. Today we also played a wilson what you have to do is get all of your team in a hoop the rules are all of your team have to be in the hoop at the same time if not all of your team are in the hoop at the same time you have to start again.

Angry Bird

Today we are going to send an email to Regan to ask how much the orange cans and the budget cans are for our Angry Bird Canstruction.  Once we have done that we are almost finished!

In the weekend I went to a chess tournament and my team came in ninth.  It was in Dunedin at Dunedin North Intermediate school.  The highlight of my day was playing 6 games of chess! The lowlight was having a bye for one round.

Tuesday 5 June 2012

Kowhaiwhai panel

Today some of the class did a Kowhaiwhai panel.  I was one of the people that did one as you can see the picture down below.  The one with the blond hair is me Luca.  We are only allowed to use three colours.  The colours were red, white and black. If you have been to a marae you might have seen Kowhaiwhai but now they're mostly at meeting houses.

Tournament

It's just two more weeks until the chess tournament.  Today was the last day to play chess to get a place in the Enrich chess team.  I played Clara (who was first on the leaderboard at the beginning of the day), but I lost.  I played Jacob, and I won. I'm currently in 7th place so I've just missed out being in the top 6.  Congratulations to those who can go to the tournament in Dunedin!! It must be exciting to go to a chess tournament.

Chess tournament

In three weeks the top six chess players from each day at Enrich will be going to Dunedin to play in a chess tournament.  I'm currently in seventh place for the Wednesday group. I want to be in sixth, fifth, fourth, third, second or first before the teams are picked.  I have been playing lots of people today but I can't seem to win!  So I'm going to keep trying next week. Remember, don't give up! Keep trying.

Teacher Comment

Hi Luca.
Wasn’t the trip to the Wearable Arts fabulous today!  There was so many amazing outfits.  I wonder where the artists got their inspiration from.  I think everyone had a favourite - yours being the Second Skin - that one was interesting.  I hear that your Canstruction group is doing a design of an Angry Bird.  I can’t wait to see how that progresses!  Katie.

Museum Art Gallery

Today the class and I went on a field trip.  We went to the Museum/Art Gallery.  We went to see the Wearable Arts display.  There were different outfits on display.  You could watch a clip that showed the different outfits on display during the awards night.  My favourite outfit was one called "Second Skin".

Chess

Last week I was at the top of the chess leader board. One week later I am in second place on the leader board .  So far this year I have learnt where all of the pieces go, how each piece can move and how to get someone in checkmate.  Reid is in first place, so next week I want to challenge him so I can be number one again!
